Oral contraceptives combined with interferon β in multiple sclerosis
Objective: To test the effect of oral contraceptives (OCs) in combination with interferon b (IFN-b)
on disease activity in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS).
Methods: One hundred fifty women with RRMS were randomized in a 1:1:1 ratio to receive IFNb-1a
subcutaneously (SC) only (group 1), IFN-b-1a SC plus ethinylstradiol 20 mg and desogestrel
150 mg (group 2), or IFN-b-1a SC plus ethinylestradiol 40 mg and desogestrel 125 mg (group 3).
The primary endpoint was the cumulative number of combined unique active (CUA) lesions on
brain MRI at week 96. Secondary endpoints included MRI and clinical and safety measures.
Results: The estimated number of cumulative CUA lesions at week 96 was 0.98 (95% confidence
interval [CI] 0.81–1.14) in group 1, 0.84 (95% CI 0.66–1.02) in group 2, and 0.72 (95% CI
0.53–0.91) in group 3, with a decrease of 14.1% (p 5 0.24) and 26.5% (p 5 0.04) when comparing
group 1 with groups 2 and 3, respectively. The number of patients with no gadoliniumenhancing
lesions was greater in group 3 than in group 1 (p 5 0.03). No significant differences
were detected in other secondary endpoints. IFN-b or OC discontinuations were equally distributed
across groups.
Conclusions: Our results translate the observations derived from experimental models to patients,
supporting the anti-inflammatory effects of OCs with high-dose estrogens, and suggest possible
directions for future research
A fast multi-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic formulation of the transition region adaptive conduction (TRAC) method

CDJ acknowledges support from the International Space Science Institute (ISSI), Bern, Switzerland to the International Teams on “Observed Multi-Scale Variability of Coronal Loops as a Probe of Coronal Heating” and “Interrogating Field-Aligned Solar Flare Models: Comparing, Contrasting and Improving”.We have demonstrated that the transition region adaptive conduction (TRAC) method permits fast and accurate numerical solutions of the field-aligned hydrodynamic equations, successfully removing the influence of numerical resolution on the coronal density response to impulsive heating. This is achieved by adjusting the parallel thermal conductivity, radiative loss, and heating rates to broaden the transition region (TR), below a global cutoff temperature, so that the steep gradients are spatially resolved even when using coarse numerical grids. Implementing the original 1D formulation of TRAC in multi-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models would require tracing a large number of magnetic field lines at every time step in order to prescribe a global cutoff temperature to each field line. In this paper, we present a highly efficient formulation of the TRAC method for use in multi-dimensional MHD simulations, which does not rely on field line tracing. In the TR, adaptive local cutoff temperatures are used instead of global cutoff temperatures to broaden any unresolved parts of the atmosphere. These local cutoff temperatures are calculated using only local grid cell quantities, enabling the MHD extension of TRAC to efficiently account for the magnetic field evolution, without tracing field lines. Consistent with analytical predictions, we show that this approach successfully preserves the properties of the original TRAC method. In particular, the total radiative losses and heating remain conserved under the MHD formulation. Results from 2D MHD simulations of impulsive heating in unsheared and sheared arcades of coronal loops are also presented. These simulations benchmark the MHD TRAC method against a series of 1D models and demonstrate the versatility and robustness of the method in multi-dimensional magnetic fields. We show, for the first time, that pressure differences, generated during the evaporation phase of impulsive heating events, can produce current layers that are significantly narrower than the transverse energy deposition.PostprintPeer reviewe
A fast multi-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic formulation of the transition region adaptive conduction (TRAC) method
We have demonstrated that the transition region adaptive conduction (TRAC) method permits fast and accurate numerical solutions of the field-aligned hydrodynamic equations, successfully removing the influence of numerical resolution on the coronal density response to impulsive heating. Broad-band spectrophotometry of the hot Jupiter HAT-P-12b from the near-UV to the near-IR
The detection of trends or gradients in the transmission spectrum of
extrasolar planets is possible with observations at very low spectral
resolution. Transit measurements of sufficient accuracy using selected
broad-band filters allow for an initial characterization of the atmosphere of
the planet. We obtained time series photometry of 20 transit events and
analyzed them homogeneously, along with eight light curves obtained from the
literature. In total, the light curves span a range from 0.35 to 1.25 microns.
During two observing seasons over four months each, we monitored the host star
to constrain the potential influence of starspots on the derived transit
parameters. We rule out the presence of a Rayleigh slope extending over the
entire optical wavelength range, a flat spectrum is favored for HAT-P-12b with
respect to a cloud-free atmosphere model spectrum. A potential cause of such
gray absorption is the presence of a cloud layer at the probed latitudes.
Furthermore, in this work we refine the transit parameters, the ephemeris and
perform a TTV analysis in which we found no indication for an unseen companion.
The host star showed a mild non-periodic variability of up to 1%. However, no
stellar rotation period could be detected to high confidence.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in A&
Study of the Fusion-Fission Process in the Reaction
Fusion-fission and fully energy-damped binary processes of the
Cl+Mg reaction were investigated using particle-particle
coincidence techniques at a Cl bombarding energy of E
8 MeV/nucleon. Inclusive data were also taken in order to determine the partial
wave distribution of the fusion process. The fragment-fragment correlation data
show that the majority of events arises from a binary-decay process with a
relatively large multiplicity of secondary light-charged particles emitted by
the two primary excited fragments in the exit channel. No evidence is observed
for ternary-breakup processes, as expected from the systematics recently
established for incident energies below 15 MeV/nucleon and for a large number
of reactions. The binary-process results are compared with predictions of
statistical-model calculations. The calculations were performed using the
Extended Hauser-Feshbach method, based on the available phase space at the
scission point of the compound nucleus. This new method uses
temperature-dependent level densities and its predictions are in good agreement
with the presented experimental data, thus consistent with the fusion-fission
origin of the binary fully-damped yields.Comment: 30 pages standard REVTeX file, 10 eps Figures; to be published at the

The pattern of TSH and fT4 levels across different BMI ranges in a large cohort of euthyroid patients with obesity.
Purpose: A multifold association relates the hypothalamo-pituitary-thyroid axis to body weight. The potential underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood. Further, the mild severity of obesity and the small proportion of individuals with obesity in so far published cohort studies provide little insights on metabolic correlates of thyroid function in obesity. Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 5009 adults with obesity (F/M, 3448/1561; age range, 18-87 years; BMI range, 30.0-82.7 kg/m2), without known thyroid disease in a study on TSH and fT4 levels, lipid profile, glucose homeostasis and insulin resistance, anthropometric parameters including BIA-derived fat mass (%FM) and fat-free mass (FFM). Results: The overall reference interval for TSH in our obese cohort was 0.58-5.07 mIU/L. As subgroups, females and non-smokers showed higher TSH levels as compared to their counterparts (p<0.0001 for both), while fT4 values were comparable between groups. There was a significant upward trend for TSH levels across incremental BMI classes in females, while the opposite trend was seen for fT4 levels in males (p<0.0001 for both). Expectedly, TSH was associated with %FM and FFM (p<0,0001 for both). TSH and fT4 showed correlations with several metabolic variables, and both declined with aging (TSH, p<0.0001; fT4, p<0.01). In a subgroup undergoing leptin measurement, leptin levels were positively associated with TSH levels (p<0.01). At the multivariable regression analysis, in the group as a whole, smoking habit emerged as the main independent predictor of TSH (β=-0.24, p<0.0001) and fT4 (β=-0.25, p<0.0001) levels. In non-smokers, %FM (β=0.08, p<0.0001) and age (β=-0.05, p<0.001) were the main significant predictors of TSH levels. In the subset of nonsmokers having leptin measured, leptin emerged as the strongest predictor of TSH levels (β=0.17, p<0.01). Conclusions: Our study provides evidence of a gender- and smoking-dependent regulation of TSH levels in obesity
Dipolar degrees of freedom and Isospin equilibration processes in Heavy Ion collisions
Background: In heavy ion collision at the Fermi energies Isospin
equilibration processes occur- ring when nuclei with different charge/mass
asymmetries interacts have been investigated to get information on the
nucleon-nucleon Iso-vectorial effective interaction. Purpose: In this paper,
for the system 48Ca +27 Al at 40 MeV/nucleon, we investigate on this process by
means of an observable tightly linked to isospin equilibration processes and
sensitive in exclusive way to the dynamical stage of the collision. From the
comparison with dynamical model calculations we want also to obtain information
on the Iso-vectorial effective microscopic interaction. Method: The average
time derivative of the total dipole associated to the relative motion of all
emitted charged particles and fragments has been determined from the measured
charges and velocities by using the 4? multi-detector CHIMERA. The average has
been determined for semi- peripheral collisions and for different charges Zb of
the biggest produced fragment. Experimental evidences collected for the systems
27Al+48Ca and 27Al+40Ca at 40 MeV/nucleon used to support this novel method of
investigation are also discussed.Comment: Submitted for publication on Phys. Rev. C. 0n 24-oct-201
